Gula melaka or palm sugar is an integral ingredient in Southeast Asian cooking. Each type of palm sugar is distinctive of its origin, i.e. the type of palm tree and region, such as gula jawa (obtained from the coconut palm) or gula aren (obtained from the aren palm) in Indonesia.

This is a collaborative project between artists and researchers working across Singapore, Indonesia, and Germany. Through workshops, community food- and art-making, and tours, we propose a holistic programme supported by multisensory art and community engagement.

This project employs gula melaka as a guide in telling compelling stories about diversity, origins, food cultures and shared fates of Southeast Asia and its people.

South Sea Collective
South Sea Collective is a collective of artists in collaboration with Natalia Tan and Akai Chew working across seas and borders seeking, unveiling, and threading connections across communities and peoples over the lands and seas.
