Living Legacies: One for the Road

Living Legacies is a project that explores the intersection between Singapore’s history, heritage and contemporary visual arts. This year’s edition of Living Legacies: One for the Road focuses on our unique public transport heritage in Singapore – the transits and commutes we take everyday on our public buses and trains.

The three selected artists will take audiences on a journey to discover the historical and contemporary significance of the country’s public transport systems. Spanning photography, paintings, and performances as well as tours, workshops and talks, these experiences will provide various touchpoints for audience engagement and participation, both digitally and in person.

Join us for One for the Road to learn more about Singapore’s rich public transport heritage, with her contemporary artists as guides to lead the way. Your journey starts here from 1 May 2023: https://livinglegacies.pluralartmag.com/

1) Sharing by Lavender Chang: Floating Rays of a Wanderer on a decommissioned bus

Sat, 6 May | 3pm to 5pm

Venue: APSN Chaoyang School

Registration: https://lavendersharingbus.peatix.com

Did you know that not all buses are scrapped at the end of the road ferrying customers? Some live on as decommissioned buses, to help students with special needs and patients to learn to travel independently. Join photographer and artist Lavender Chang on a rare decommissioned bus at APSN Chaoyang School, as she shares “Floating Rays of a Wanderer”, an evocative series of artworks tracing journeys on public buses.

She will share about her artistic process in creating her signature long-exposure photographs, her relationship to bus journeys and insights on the history of public buses in Singapore. Reconsider your connection with time, memory and travel, as we experience how the bus becomes a giant camera capturing the changing landscapes of Singapore.

2) Workshop by Yeo Tze Yang: “One Day, I Hope I Don’t Need To Take The MRT Anymore”

Sat, 13 May 2023 | 3pm to 5pm

Sun, 14 May 2023 | 3pm to 5pm

Venue: Stamford Gallery, National Museum of Singapore

Registration: https://yeotzeyangworkshop.peatix.com

Join artist Yeo Tze Yang in a workshop which will make you look at your daily bus and train commute differently!

For artist Yeo Tze Yang, scenes on public transport appear in his paintings to express his observations of everyday life in Singapore. Yet, in spite of the connectivity of our public transport system, he observes that many Singaporeans still hope to one day own and drive a car in Singapore, representing class and status. How one gets around the city is fundamental to every person’s daily life, and concurrently reflects the class dynamics of Singapore society.

In this workshop, he invites you to think about your personal memories and histories with public transport. Come together to create an artwork using pictures of observations on your daily commute, and reflect on your relationship to our buses and trains.

3) Panel Discussion with Artists

Sun, 7 May 2023 | 11am to 12pm

Venue: Seminar Room, National Museum of Singapore
