Imagine getting time off work to participate or spectate in sports. Horse racing was all the rage back in the day, so the authorities used to declare half-day holidays. Enthusiasts would descend on the racecourse in Farrer Park, in the present-day precinct of Little India. Women would attend in their best dress while military band performances entertained spectators in the lead up to afternoon races.

Did you know Little India hosted the city’s first official racecourse for horse riding? The facility which opened in 1843 was so popular with Europeans that a number of families even moved into the neighbourhood!

Swing by the Indian Heritage Centre for two weekends of specially curated programmes designed to walk you through the precinct’s role in Singapore’s sports and public transport heritage landscape! Enjoy free craft activities, pose with Insta-worthy backdrops and visit our museum galleries for an immersive and broader experience of the stories from our streets.

Indian Heritage Centre

The Indian Heritage Centre, under the management of the National Heritage Board and with support from the Indian community, traces the history of the Indian and South Asian communities in the Southeast Asian region. Situated at 5 Campbell Lane, the Centre also serves as a springboard for visitors to explore Little India and enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of the historical precinct.
