Gardening is a part of Singapore’s DNA. We are after all “a city, in nature”. What does this mean for a housing estate in Boon Lay? The seeds we plant, and how we choose to grow them, reveal a lot about our values and priorities. Over a three-month period, 3Pumpkins conducted interviews at Boon Lay Drive to understand the culture of residential gardening in the neighbourhood. Gathering narratives about emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health, the research uncovers a common value of sayang (care)— for the gardens and for others.
How does the community sayang themselves and each other through the plants they grow at home? In 3Pumpkins’ signature social practice, art and community action come together hand-in-hand to answer these questions. A work of love by permaculturists from Cultivate Central, artist Isabelle Desjeux, children at Tak Takut Kids Club, and local residents and stakeholders, Kebun Sayang Sayang / Our Dear Children Community Garden is a living, growing installation that presents and perpetuates our intangible cultural heritage.
