HistoriaSG – Curating the Environment: The Collection and Display of Natural History in Singapore

Associate Professor Timothy Barnard, author of “Nature’s Colony: Empire, Nation and Environment in the Singapore Botanic Gardens”, will speak about the significance of natural history in Singapore. After the talk, participants can look forward to a curator tour of the exhibition “A Voyage of Love and Longing”.

About Associate Professor Timothy Barnard

Timothy P. Barnard is a historian of the environment and culture of Southeast Asia, and is currently Associate Professor in the Department of History at NUS. He has published four single-authored monographs, two edited collections, and over 25 book chapters. His latest book, Imperial Creatures, weaves together a series of fascinating tales to document how various “imperial creatures” in Singapore were impacted by colonialism—tiger and bull fights, exotic animal trades, how the island state dealt with the import of rabies, and much more are discussed in this fascinating book.

 

About Singapore HeritageFest at National Museum

Through the use of its level 2 galleries and the natural history collection, the museum will feature travellers’ stories through time, Singapore’s natural heritage and will also take participants on a tour of Fort Canning Hill and possibly, Hotel Fort Canning.

 

The museum’s programmes will seek to provide opportunities for inter-generational conversations and creation of memorable experiences, through collaborations and ground-up initiatives with businesses and partners within the vicinity.
