The Cosmopolitan Malay World through the Muslim Heritage of Kampong Gelam: Gravestone styles, writing scripts and calligraphic art at Jalan Kubor Cemetery
Sat, 10 May, 10am - 1pm
A Public Seminar on the cultural and artistic legacies of Jalan Kubor Cemetery gravestones - the variety of gravestone types and their aesthetic aspects as seen through Arabic calligraphy and Jawi, and inscriptions in Bugis, Javanese, Gujarati and Chinese writing scripts -- all examples are drawn from Jalan Kubor Cemetery's Muslim gravestones.
Led by architectural historian Dr Imran bin Tajudeen and supported by calligraphy and script experts, the session examines gravestone inscriptions, writing traditions, and the cross-cultural expressions that shaped Kampong Gelam as a hub of cosmopolitan Islam.
