This talk dives into the rich and multifaceted heritage of Singapore’s hawker culture. In the first segment, Senior Librarian Lim Tin Seng will present a source-based narrative to illuminate the enduring legacy and significance of our UNESCO-recognised hawker culture. Drawing on historical library and archival materials—such as photographs, maps, newspapers, and government reports—he will map the journey of Singapore’s hawker culture from street vending to contemporary hawker centres. In the second segment, Ryan Kueh, author of From Streets to Stalls, will examine both historical and contemporary aspects of hawker culture. From its likely origins in the 14th century to its socioeconomic and political relevance over time, and its continued cultural importance today, Ryan will offer insights into the longstanding importance of Singapore's hawkers and how it has evolved through the times.
