Our tour of the Bras Basah area will shed light on some pieces of the past you’re probably not aware of, from an elaborate building façade that once housed an early 20th-century car dealership to the place where a prison and an expansive laundry production line once stood.

We’ll show you a gorgeous old cupola where the rich and famous used to gather for the view of the nearby racecourse, after which we’ll explore the back story to the colourful Albert Street area ending with the story of Judaism and Catholicism in Singapore. And much more!

Other highlights include the people, cultures, and buildings associated with this area's past as the Catholic quarter (murals and photos in old Catholic High School, the Good Shepherd Cathedral, Chijmes Gate), the Jewish Mahallah (Maghain Aboth synagogue, David Elias building, Ellison & Jacob Ballas buildings), and later "Japanese town" (Old Japanese hospital) plus the wonderful mix of culture & religion as exemplified by the Krishna & Guan Yin temples in Waterloo St.

Nowadays it is also a rich area for the arts (SOTA, LASALLE School of the Arts, Cathay Buildings, Temasek Shophouse), in addition to boasting many examples of art deco architecture, especially in Prinsep St which also houses the very unusual Prinsep St Church.
