Join us on a historian-led tour of the gardens at Fort Canning Park to explore the history of Singapore’s three cash crops - coffee, pineapple and coconut - that were once key drivers of Singapore’s economy.
Learn about their impact on Singapore’s nature, how they have shaped our landscape, and lessons we can draw on to promote a better understanding of sustainable ways of living.
After the tour, you will participate in a themed workshop to experience hands-on the modern uses for by-products of one of the three featured crops - coffee, pineapple or coconut. This informational and instructional session will highlight practical ways to upcycle and recycle common household food and items to reduce waste in our homes.
Pineapple Theme
The fun and learning continue in a workshop to explore the use of pineapple in our Singapore food culture. But what happens to the peels and core after cutting up the fruit?
In this pineapple themed workshop, we will discover ways we can use pineapple byproducts and waste. It is hands-on to make an eco-enzyme that we can use for gardening and as a general household cleaning solution.
Coffee Theme (Family Edition)
The coffee themed edition includes a special family edition, where you and your child can experience a complimentary family portrait session featuring traditional film photography but with an environmentally friendly twist.
The fun and learning continue in a workshop to discover our coffee culture in Singapore. Then it is hands-on to create your own blend of coffee scrub from used coffee grounds.
Coconut Theme
The fun and learning continue in a themed workshop. Have you cooled down with a fresh coconut drink in Singapore’s sweltering heat? Do you wonder what happens to the inedible husks after finishing your drink?
We will find out what byproducts coconut husks can be made into, followed by a hands-on activity using cocopeat as a medium to grow microgreens.
