[Cancelled] A Walk through Little Hainan

by Yeo Yenping
9, 15 May • 11:00am • Bugis/Bras Basah precinct

Apart from chicken rice, can you name another dish created by Hainanese settlers? Find out more about the Chinese dialect group’s contributions to the nation’s palate in this tour of the former “Little Hainan” in the Bugis area.

Little Hainan

Due to tightened safe management measures, this programme has been cancelled. We will be in touch with participants who had signed up, to arrange for full refunds.

The Hainanese might be one of the smallest Chinese dialect groups in the republic but their impact on Singapore’s food scene has been enormous. During the colonial era, many worked as cooks and waiters in British households which led to early editions of “fusion food”. Our guide Yeo Yenping will walk you through the former “Little Hainan” in the Bugis area; share with you stories about Hainanese food heritage; and take you to Hainanese establishments where pioneers in the restaurant trade will share personal recollections and accounts of their contributions to the nation’s belly.
